 What is Acupuncture?

According to traditional Chinese medicine, all ailments and illnesses are caused by an unbalanced  flow of energy (Qi) in the body. Acupuncture strives to reestablish a lost balance by regulating the energy flow through the body. This is achieved by accessing Qi at the most superficial points on the body, i.e. acupuncture points. At the present time, there are 360 regular and over 1000 extraordinary acupuncture points known on the human body. Acupuncture is the main modality of traditional Chinese medicine practiced for thousands of years. At present, a larger number of the world population is treated by this traditional medicine than Western medicine. It is effective, cheaper and has no side effects. The National Institute of Health (NIH) is now supporting acupuncture research. For more details on acupuncture, history, theories, and methods, see NIH site.

What’s it used for?

  • Respiratory Problems, Recurring Colds and Coughs

  • Joint Pains (Knee, Shoulder, Wrist, Finger Joints…)

Alka Velenik, Ph.D. studied TCM and Acupuncture with David Bole, A.P., Ph.D. and Joy Bole, A.P. at Healing Arts Center/ Florida School of Acupuncture and Oriental medicine, Gainesville. She passed Florida Boards Exam in 1995 and is a certified Acupuncturist Physician (A.P.) practicing in Gainesville since 1996.

Treatment

After the examination and the diagnosis of the patient, a few acupuncture points are selected for treatment. Most often these points are located on the legs and arms. Hair-like thin needles (sterile and disposable) are superficially inserted into the chosen acupuncture points. This causes a tingling sensation. The needles are left there for 20 minutes. Sometimes a single session can resolve the condition. If the condition is chronic, it takes more sessions for lasting benefits.
